Types of light bulbs

Light bulbs have been with us since the 19th century and are undoubtedly one of the household items we cannot do without. Thanks to them, we are able to see what we need to see without having to fumble around in the dark. However, it is worth bearing in mind what types of light bulbs there are and how they work. Then you will find what you need.

House lighting

When renovating, building or redecorating a home, there comes a time when we make key decisions. One of these stages is, of course, choosing the best lighting, which will be matched to the place where it is to serve us. It is not an art to buy bulbs, but it is not easy to choose the right types.

Recall that the garden will need completely different lighting than, for example, the living room in the flat. That is why it is so important to be aware of what we need. The most important issue for many is the selection of covers for these bulbs. It is thanks to them that you can significantly beautify a given flat or house.

In this case, we must admit that this is an important issue, because often, it is to the lamps that we must choose a specific bulb, of a given type. However, in order to make the best decision in choosing the right lighting, you should know the types of bulbs. After all, their specifics, appearance, operation may differ significantly from each other.

Structure of a light bulb – what does it consist of?

Before we go into the substance, it is worth focusing on what a traditional light bulb actually consists of. Regardless of the type, design, type and characteristics, they have almost the same structure in terms of how they work. A light bulb consists of a diffuser, a luminous element and a thread. Nevertheless, they are very different from each other.

Although there are three common features to every light bulb, it is by manipulating them during manufacture that we can obtain the different light properties and characteristics of a particular light. Thanks to the fact that it is possible to achieve just such a way of obtaining different performance options, we can tailor the product to the needs of customers and their preferences.

Thanks to this solution, virtually everyone will find the ideal lighting for their home. And when it comes to the types of bulbs, they focus on the way they work, but not only. Remember that the other branch of light bulbs is threads, which are of great importance. But learn about the types of light bulbs to gain important knowledge.

Types of light bulbs

It is worth presenting the different options that we can encounter when we want to purchase lighting. Of course, we are not able to list here every type found in the world. We will try to describe in detail those that we can find every day in the DIY store.

Among the most well-known light bulbs, we will therefore find:

  • LED,
  • Halogen,
  • Incandescent,
  • Fluorescent lamps.

When it comes to lamps, as well as incandescent bulbs that we meet in industry, we can distinguish:

  • Metal halide lamps,
  • Sodium.

Of course, we cannot overlook the fact that, contrary to appearances, these are not universal options. This means that one bulb is not able to fit into every lamp. It must have an element of a specific type that will allow it to fit its intended purpose. You will certainly not be surprised to hear that we are talking about the thread.

Threads and shanks are, in fact, of considerable importance when it comes to selecting bulbs. Without knowing about them, you will buy a bulb of the intended type, come home and find that it does not fit the lamp. However, we will mention these in later headings.

LED and halogen lamps

To make it easier for you to choose a light bulb, we have decided to describe each of the ones presented in detail. When it comes to LED bulbs, they are a very popular option. We may know them, thanks to their calling card in the form of low power consumption. In addition, we are unlikely to find them in too large sizes, as they are usually quite small.

They often replace normal light bulbs, giving their owner a lot of advantages in terms of money. They consume between 5 and 20 watts and are characterized by a long service life and a high price, which pays for itself through low bills. Halogen bulbs may look like classic lighting, but they are a much more efficient option.

The name comes from the halogen which fills the inside with our bulb. Thanks to its existence, we can observe a certain event inside, namely the halogen regeneration cycle. Thanks to this whole process, we get strong light, which is perfect for places that need strong illumination.

Incandescent and fluorescent lamps

Let’s move on to the most classic option in terms of room lighting, which is, of course, incandescent bulbs. However, these are becoming increasingly rare, as their sale was discontinued 6 years ago. They can, however, be purchased under the names shockproof and high-temperature bulb. Mostly, they are characterized by their low price.

They also reflect colours very accurately. Unfortunately, they are a very short-lived option, if they shine 8 hours every day, they would only last us 4 months. As for fluorescent lamps, we are talking about a compact solution. Thanks to them, we can regulate the energy consumption of the bulb, which is a convenience.

They work much more efficiently than incandescent solutions and do not heat up as much as they do. They last about 8 times longer than traditional lighting. Unfortunately, they are harmful to the eyes and skin, because when working, they emit harmful UV radiation. This is responsible for the accelerated ageing of the skin and simply endangers it.

Types of light bulbs – industrial lamps

It’s time to discuss the previously mentioned types of industrial light bulbs, which can be found in factories and productions. The first of these are metal halide lamps, which give off a strong white light reminiscent of natural sunlight. However, this is obviously not the end of the advantages of this option.

It is also worth mentioning the fact of their efficiency, which is undeniably stunning. Let’s not forget about their really long lifespan, which can provide our company with lighting for years. When it comes to sodium lamps, you may be familiar with them due to the fact that they are often used as city lights, i.e. on streets.

Interestingly, thanks to their excellent performance, they have displaced mercury vapour lamps with great ease. Their interior is filled with argon, sodium and neon. Quite a characteristic aspect of their operation is, of course, long lighting time, lasting up to several minutes. It is worth mentioning that they shine for about 16,000 hours.

Types of caps and threads

It is worth mentioning that threads and shanks also have a key role in the choice of our lighting, as we have discussed in the previous paragraphs. There are types of bulbs and types of threads and caps. It is thanks to them that we are able to fit any light bulb to a specific and desired location.

Let us therefore proceed to present the various types and kinds in this regard. Among the threads and caps we distinguish, of course:

  • MR11,
  • G4,
  • MR16,
  • E14,
  • E27,
  • GU10.

These types represent the most common options in today’s lighting market. To help you decide on the right light bulb and its thread, we have decided to characterize each of the above types. This will help you make the best choice.

Different threads

If we follow our list, the first thread to discuss would be MR11, but we will start with MR16. This is a reflector plug of sorts, having a spacing of around 6 mm. It is distinguished by both the shape of the legs and the way it is mounted in the socket. This is a common option, although not everyone knows this.

For example, we can see MR16 LED bulbs in lamps suspended from the ceiling. This means that they are found, for example, in places to study or work. The twin of the above presented thread is of course MR11. If they are similar between each other, what makes them different?

Well, the biggest difference between the two is the spacing of the legs. According to common information, MR11 has it at only 4 mm. It is also worth mentioning that bulb types such as this are quite small. Therefore, they are most often installed in decorative lighting. Their wattage in volumes is most often 150.

Types of light bulbs and the most popular threads

It is time to take a look at the most popular threads, which are still chosen by customers. This is, of course, the E27 screw thread. As for the name of this option itself, it comes from the diameter of 27 mm. Another interchangeable name is large Edison threads. This is a very common solution and everyone knows it, especially manufacturers.

Therefore, no one is surprised to find this option in public places, homes, or other areas of life. It provides us with an increase in light output and adequate energy consumption. E14 has a smaller half of the threads, that is, those with a diameter of 14 mm. In this case, we are talking about the small Edison thread.

As far as its installation is concerned, it does not belong to specific solutions. It is carried out on a rather simple principle, namely we unscrew it and screw it into the socket. Where can we find this type of bulb in everyday life? These will be, of course, desk lamps, small chandeliers or electrical installations with low power.

G4 and GU10

It’s time for the rest of our list, that is, the two items we haven’t written about yet. The types of bulbs are undoubtedly different and include, of course, the reflector plug, or GU10. As for its construction, it has as many as two legs, called cylindrical. Their spacing is 10 mm, and the whole thing is quite similar to MR16.

As far as the legs are concerned, it is worth mentioning that they are mounted in a certain holder on the so-called snap-on principle. And when we talk about the guaranteed atmospheric light, we are talking about 702 lumens. The last product we will discuss is the G4 type thread. It is characterised by the smallest size of all on our list.

Looking at its construction, it may remind us of the threads, which are placed in the bulb in the so-called press-fit. In this case, however, the difference is that the G4 legs are rather longer than the press-on option. When it comes to translating into life, these types of bulbs are used as spot lighting. The wattage is around 200 lumens.

Bulb types and colour of light

Remember that there are a number of things to consider before buying a light bulb. As you learned above, there are different types of bulbs and different threads. The entirety of such a bulb is important, but we can only choose accordingly if we have the above knowledge.

However, this is not the end of the selection of properties and types. Well, the colour of the light coming from the lighting also matters. It can be cooler or warmer, depending on what kind of atmosphere you want to maintain in the room. The issue that determines the colour of the light emitted is of course the colour temperature.

The best reference for the scale of parameters measured in Kelvin is daylight. On this scale it can be around 4500. If we choose options above this value, we will obtain a cold appearance of light in the flat. Choosing those lower than the designated scale, we get the opposite of the predecessor, i.e. warm light.

The type of bulb is important

Remember that it is not worth deciding on just any bulb looking only at the lowest possible price. It is worth taking into account the properties of the products you are going to buy. This is because the cheapest options are the least long lasting in terms of performance. This means that you will spend more on bills and buying more over the years.

If you choose a more expensive but energy-efficient option, you will get products that will last for many years. In addition, thanks to them, our bills for electricity will be much smaller, and this will make the whole thing pay off. When it comes to the types of bulbs, we think that LED or halogen bulbs are the best choice.
